Pair of Picnic Napkins

made by me

These colourful napkins were woven to explore the effect of using different colours in warp and weft.

It was one of the exercises from the Jane Stafford School of Weaving Episode 2 and we were encouraged to use colours outside our comfort zone! I used Venne Organic 8/2 cotton and wove a number of tea-towels and napkins using this warp, some with stripes and some with blocks of colour. These two remaining napkins are like fraternal twins, the colour sequence of the weft follows the colour sequence of the warp in opposite directions on each napkin and create a different combination of colour blends. The weave structure is plain weave – I wove these using 4 shafts but they could also be woven on a rigid heddle loom.

16" square, these napkins will make a cheerful addition to any al fresco dining experience! Set of 2 napkins
