How to weave a houndstooth scarf
Hounds-tooth can be both masculine and feminine, it's a very versatile pattern and it's really easy to weave on a rigid heddle loom.
What you'll need...
- 2 x 100g balls of double knit (DK) yarn in contrasting colours. As with all “colour and weave” patterns
- I used a standard 7.5dpi reed
- I was weaving on my 40cm Rigid Heddle Loom but you can use any sampleit loom, knitters loom, harp loom, presto or rigid heddle loom.
Warping...
You want a warp length of about 80ins. I used a width of approximately 11” - 84 holes and slots. Alternate the two colours, two ends at a time across the desired width – 8” or 20cm is ideal. Tie colour A on the back warp stick and pass through the slot to a warping peg. Repeat with colour B passing through the next slot. Continue alternating colours in this way so that you have a loop (2 ends) of A and a loop (2 ends) of B throughout.
Threading...
Cut the loops at the peg end, wind on and move one of the ends of colour A from the slot to the hole. Do the same with the next two ends of colour B. Continue moving one thread from slot to hole across the width.
Weaving...
Weave two picks in colour A followed by two picks in colour B. Repeat. You can keep the 4 edges neat by passing the yarn being used for the next pick under the yarn just used. If you want to hem stitch, do this before you wind the work on for the first time as it is much easier to do this on the loom with the work under some tension. Don't forget to do it at the other end before you remove the work from the loom!
Finishing...
Wash in warm soapy water and rinse . Lie flat until almost dry and then press with a steam iron. Tidy up the fringe if necessary and wear or gift with pride!
