MAKING YOUR SPINNING WHEEL SPIN TIP TOP!

I've fixed up 100's of Ashford spinning wheels in my time. So many issues could've been avoided with a bit of TLC. Here's my 6 top tips to keep your wheel spinning smooth, because a happy wheel means better yarn!

#1 - Lubrication

This is the easiest yet most important tip. Apply a small drop of water based oil to moving parts especially the crankshaft and flyer bearings. Do this on a little and often basis but never use regular oils or sprays which may stain your wheel.

#2 - The drive band

Replace the drive band cord regularly - it is such an important and yet low cost item. Make sure that the tightness of the belt is adjusted correctly especially on double drive wheels. It should not be too tight as it will place unnecessary pressure on the flyer and bearings.

#3 - The brake band

On single drive scotch tension wheels, replace the spring and brake band regularly and check for smooth operation - again, this is such an important and yet low cost item. Look especially in the grooves of your bobbins where it can sometimes pinch and catch (see next tip).

#4 - Bobbins

Old bobbins with loose rattly cores or worn whorl grooves with tiny splits that catch or pinch the drive band or brake band will ruin your spinning experience. Discard them!

#5 - Treadles

Apply a little wax from a candle (or water based oil) to the treadle pivot points which will help stop annoying and distracting squeaks.

#6 - Wheel conditioning

From time to time give your wheel a wipe & buff all over with a little clear wax to feed & nourish and condition the natural wood. This will help to prevent splits & cracks often caused by modern central heating or after prolonged storage in a loft or garage. While you're at it check all those screws, legs and bolts for tightness.

Happy spinning!
